Have you added workers to your contracting business since filing a workers’ compensation insurance exemption with CSLB? If so, you must submit a certificate of workers’ compensation insurance or a certification of self insurance, as required by law.
If you are covered by a minimum policy for workers’ compensation and have added laborers or are using leased employees or a Professional Employer Organization (PEO), you must update your coverage to account for the additional employees or have the company that provides the laborers submit proof of their workers’ compensation coverage. It is your responsibility to make sure that workers’ comp policy information is current with CSLB. Failure to do so could result in administrative action against your license.
The certificate of insurance form should include the:
- Leasing company’s name and address
- Workers’ comp policy number with the effective and expiration dates
- Statement that this is the lease company for the contractor (include name, address, license number)
- Identify the certificate holder as the Contractors State License Board, P.O. Box 26000, Sacramento, CA 95826
- Include a signature of the authorized representative
There is no fee required to update your workers’ compensation coverage information with CSLB. Your workers’ compensation insurance carrier or the leasing company can email certificates to firstname.lastname@example.org or mail them to the above referenced Post Office box.
Failure to update your workers’ compensation coverage information could also subject you to a stop work order. CSLB investigators are authorized to issue Stop Orders if they determine that jobsite employees are not covered by a workers’ comp insurance policy. Stop Orders are effective immediately and are in effect until the licensee furnishes proof of coverage.
Check your contractor license information on the CSLB Instant License Check to make sure the information about your license is up-to-date; if not, you, your insurer, or the leasing company must furnish CSLB with the necessary materials to update your license status.
